Hyperthermia Suite

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between mild, whole-body, and adaptive whole-body hyperthermia?

The difference is primarily one of intensity and personalization. Mild whole-body hyperthermia raises core temperature to around 38.5°C — a gentler entry point suited to those new to heat therapy. Classic whole-body hyperthermia raises temperature further, to around 39.5–40°C, for a more complete immune activation. Adaptive whole-body hyperthermia personalizes the heat-stress protocol to your individual response and recovery capacity, rather than applying a fixed temperature target. All three are delivered under continuous physician monitoring, with the right level determined by your health status and treatment goals.

Can hyperthermia help with chronic infections like Lyme disease or Epstein-Barr virus?

There's early, promising evidence. The German Whole-Body Hyperthermia Guideline notes hopeful published results for extreme whole-body hyperthermia in chronic Lyme disease, while explicitly stating this evidence still needs confirmation through more rigorous, unbiased review. This reflects where the science currently stands: a recognised clinical application with real reported benefit, but one still classified as promising rather than firmly established. At Elysium, we're transparent about this distinction rather than overstating what's proven.

Is hyperthermia safe for the heart, and who shouldn't do it?

Hyperthermia is generally well-tolerated, but cardiac status is the central safety consideration. According to established WBH clinical guidelines, the most important absolute contraindications are cardiac insufficiency above grade 2, major organ insufficiency, and peripheral artery disease, while cardiac arrhythmias and acute infections require individual assessment beforehand. In one large safety analysis of nearly 400 patients across 855 sessions, adverse events were mostly mild — headache, transient skin reactions, or modest heart-rate and blood-pressure changes — with no serious adverse events reported. This is precisely why a full pre-treatment cardiac assessment is mandatory at Elysium before any hyperthermia protocol begins.

How is medical hyperthermia different from a sauna or steam room?

The core difference is precision and medical oversight. A sauna raises skin and ambient temperature, but doesn't reliably or measurably raise core body temperature to a specific therapeutic target. Medical hyperthermia uses infrared technology to raise core temperature to an exact, monitored level — typically 38.5–40.5°C — with continuous physician supervision of vital signs throughout. This precision is what allows hyperthermia to be used as a genuine immune-activating therapy, rather than a general relaxation practice.

Can whole-body hyperthermia support mood or mental health, not just physical recovery?

Yes, this is one of the better-evidenced applications outside oncology. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in JAMA Psychiatry found that a single whole-body hyperthermia session produced a rapid antidepressant effect that lasted approximately six weeks, a notably strong and fast-acting result for a single-session intervention. The proposed mechanism involves activation of the body's heat-shock and serotonergic pathways.

How long does it take to notice effects after a hyperthermia session?

Some effects are immediate, others take longer to build. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in JAMA Psychiatry found that a single whole-body hyperthermia session produced measurable mood improvements within days, persisting for around six weeks. Physical effects — such as reduced inflammation and improved circulation — tend to build cumulatively over a course of sessions rather than appearing after just one visit. At Elysium, treatment plans are structured around this cumulative pattern, with monitoring to track how your specific markers respond over time.

Hyperthermia

The body has always known how to heal itself through heat. A feveractivates immune cells, targets pathogens, and accelerates repair.

The Hyperthermia Suite recreates this effect under continuousphysician supervision. Core body temperature is carefully raised using infraredtechnology, activating the body's natural immune and recovery pathways —calibrated to your individual tolerance and treatment goals, rather than asingle fixed protocol.

Every session is:

  • Preceded by medical assessment, including cardiac screening where appropriate
  • Continuously monitored by a physician throughout
  • Followed by dedicated recovery and hydration
The Hyperthermia Suite is designed for those who:
  • Are managing chronic inflammation, persistent infections, or slow recovery
  • Want to support their immune system through a natural, physiologically-driven process
  • Are seeking a treatment that complements apheresis or other longevity protocols
  • Value a deeply restorative, high-touch clinical experience — not just a therapeutic outcome
